Frequently Asked Questions

Before contacting RAC, please refer to the following Frequently Asked Questions for an answer to your question. If your question isn't addressed, click here to contact us.

What is RAQ?

RAC is a nonprofit, non-partisan coalition formed to represent the interests of recording artists with regard to legislative issues in which corporate and artists' interests conflict, and to address other public policy debates that come before the music industry.

How can I join?

Membership is currently open to "Any living person or Estate who has performed as a featured vocalist or musician on a phonograph record, whether as a solo artist or member of a musical group that has been commercially released in the United States, on a label with national distribution that includes but is not limited to the top ten retail accounts in the U.S. at the time of release."

If you or an artist you represent is eligible and interested in receiving more information about membership, please send an email to racinfo@recordingartistscoalition.com.

I'm not a recording artist. How can I help?

Please send your contact information to us at racinfo@recordingartistscoalition.com and we will add you to our supporter database. (We do not sell or provide names to third parties.)

I am an unsigned musician. Can you help me get a record deal/manager/attorney?

As a nonprofit coalition formed to represent the interests of recording artists with regard to legislative issues and other public policy debates that come before the music industry, RAC does not help artists get record deals/managers/attorneys. However, a good source of information is Don Passman's book, "All You Need To Know About The Music Business."

I am an unsigned musician who may sign to a label someday/who is in the process of signing to a label. How can I protect myself?

Consider reading Don Passman's "All You Need To Know About The Music Business" if you have not already and don't negotiate a contract without representation.

I have a question about a legal/copyright/royalty/licensing issue. Can you help me?

RAC does not offer legal advice. If a recording artist has a legal problem or question, the recording artist should contact legal counsel with expertise in the music industry.
